Domaine Éric de Suremain - Organic and Biodynamic wines at the Château de Monthelie in Burgundy

The Château de Monthelie, an 18th-century building with the distinctive glazed tile roof of Burgundy, is listed in the inventory of historic monuments. It was in 1903 that Albert de Suremain inherited the estate, before his son Robert settled there in 1930 to cultivate the vineyards of Monthelie and Rully.

Today, this 10.5-hectare family estate, founded in 1746 and passed down from generation to generation, is run by Éric, Dominique and their daughter Gwendoline, who returned to the land of her childhood in 2019 after studying viticulture and oenology.

Rooted in organic and biodynamic viticulture since 1996, the estate tends each plot with meticulous care in order to reveal the pure expression of Burgundian terroir. Respect for the terroir guides every step: mass selection, lunar calendar scheduling, hand harvesting, foot treading, vinification in wooden vats and ageing in barrels. The organic wines are certified by Ecocert, a testament to a sincere commitment to the respect of the soil, the plant and the fruit.

The estate farms 5.7 hectares in Monthélie with Villages and Premier Cru appellations, and 5 hectares in Rully also under Village and Premier Cru appellations, producing red wines from Pinot Noir and white wines from Chardonnay, the emblematic grape varieties of Burgundy. In Rully, the estate notably holds three monopoles over the prestigious climats of Agneux, Pillot and Meix Caillet — Premier Crus of great finesse, combining minerality, roundness and tension.

At Domaine de Suremain, wine is never rushed: time and nature are given all the space they need to play their role, with each step monitored with precision and sensitivity, so as to create wines of character that fully reflect the personality of their terroir.
