Domaine de la Romanée-Conti – The Absolute Pinnacle of Burgundy's Grands Crus in Vosne-Romanée
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world, with 25.5 hectares planted primarily in Vosne-Romanée, along the Route des Grands Crus of the Côte de Nuits.
Its history stretches back to the 13th century, when Benedictine monks identified and patiently shaped this exceptional terroir. The estate takes its name from Prince Louis-François de Bourbon-Conti, who acquired the vineyard in 1760 at a then-considerable price. The Société Civile du Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was founded in 1942 and is today co-managed by Bertrand de Villaine and Perrine Fenal, heirs of the two founding families.
The vineyard extends across nearly 31 hectares, exclusively classified as Grands Crus of Burgundy, located primarily in the commune of Vosne-Romanée, with additional holdings in Corton and Puligny-Montrachet.
The soils, composed of brown limestone, fine clays and stony scree resting on an ancient limestone bedrock, lend the wines a mineral depth and great precision.
The range of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti covers a collection of Grands Crus unrivalled in the world of wine: Romanée-Conti (monopole, 1.81 ha), the estate's absolute jewel and the rarest and most coveted wine in the world; La Tâche (monopole, 6.06 ha), powerful and flamboyant; Richebourg (3.51 ha), of incomparable richness and firmness; Romanée-Saint-Vivant (5.28 ha), of remarkable elegance and subtlety; Grands Échézeaux (3.53 ha), of great consistency and complexity; Échézeaux (4.67 ha), always producing ripe and expressive grapes; Corton Grand Cru (2.27 ha), from the finest plots of Les Bressandes, Les Renardes and Clos du Roi; Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, a majestic expression of Chardonnay in the Côte de Beaune; and finally Montrachet Grand Cru (0.68 ha), considered one of the greatest dry white wines in the world. The estate also produces a Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Cuvée Duvault-Blochet", crafted from the estate's younger vines.
The estate applies a viticulture of absolute exigence: entirely manual harvesting, extremely low yields and scrupulous adherence to the lunar calendar. The domaine produces approximately 80,000 bottles per year, sold largely in wooden cases, reserved and sold in advance to a clientele of restaurateurs and collectors from around the world. The wines of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti are built to endure for decades, revealing over time tertiary notes of undergrowth, truffle and spice — the hallmarks of an unrivalled aromatic complexity.
